8-bit adder

About the 8-bit adder PCB

8-bit adder is an open source PCB design by michaelfortunato, published on GitHub. It is a board, with 16 components from 5 distinct parts.

By type, the board carries 6 transistors, 5 resistors, 3 diodes and 2 switches.

It belongs with the power & battery designs in this gallery.

Building an 8 bit adder using discrete transistors (bjts)

I want to build an 8 bit adder using transistors as my first electronics project.

An 8 bit adder is composed of a series of 1 bit adders chained together. A 1 bit adder is a function that maps input bit a, input bit b, and the input carry bit to the sum bit and the output carry bit. Here's the definition

I didn't want to look up how this was done so I built the following versions in Logisim Evolution. I wanted to see if I could simplify the circuit after each revision. I think version 1 is most straightforward while version 3 is the most elegant.

8-bit adder: common questions

How many components are on the 8-bit adder?

16 components, from 5 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the 8-bit adder design files?

From the michaelfortunato/8-bit-adder repository on GitHub, which has the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the 8-bit adder design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with michaelfortunato. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.
