About the MusselHeartRate PCB

MusselHeartRate is an open source NXP PCB design by millerlp, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 101.6 × 39.4 mm, with 59 components from 26 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the TEENSY_3.5/3.6, from the NXP family. Other key parts include the TCA9548APWR, JUMPER-PAD-3-2OF3_NC_BY_TRACE and HOLE-LAYOUT4-40-SOCKET-HEAD. By type, the board carries 19 resistors, 14 ICs, 5 capacitors, 2 switches and 2 LEDs.

It belongs with the wearables designs in this gallery.

From the project

Mussel heart rate monitor

Hardware and software for developing a heart rate / pulse sensor for use on marine mussels.

There are two main hardware projects in this repository:

Circuit board design for a small carrier board that holds a pulse oximeter chip, such as MAX30101 or MAX30102, along with ancillary support chips (level shifter, 1.8V power supply). This is the sensor that is glued to the outside of a mussel (or oyster, or clam, etc.) shell and uses infrared light to pick up the movement of the heart through the shell.

MusselHeartRate: common questions

What microcontroller does the MusselHeartRate use?

The MusselHeartRate is built around the TEENSY_3.5/3.6, from the NXP family.

How big is the MusselHeartRate PCB?

The MusselHeartRate measures 101.6 × 39.4 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the MusselHeartRate?

59 components, from 26 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the MusselHeartRate design files?

From the millerlp/MusselHeartRate repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the MusselHeartRate design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with millerlp. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the MusselHeartRate without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug NXP firmware against it before you order a PCB.
