About the Egpad PCB

Egpad is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by ohkiba, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 111.1 × 133.4 mm, with 59 components from 7 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ProMicro, from the AVR/Arduino family. By type, the board carries 20 diodes, 14 LEDs, 12 resistors, 6 capacitors, 3 switches and 1 IC.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

discipad with rotary encoders i guess

One problem that I ran into right off the bat was there wasn't a lot of information on how to implement a rotary encoder (specifically an EC11 encoder), so I had to search quite a while to find anything useful. Luckily, I came across this comment thread which contained lots of helpful graphics and theory for implementing your own rotary encoder.

Now that I knew how to implement all the components required for the board, I came up with this schematic:

Egpad: common questions

What microcontroller does the Egpad use?

The Egpad is built around the ProMicro, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Egpad PCB?

The Egpad measures 111.1 × 133.4 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Egpad?

59 components, from 7 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Egpad design files?

From the ohkiba/egpad repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Egpad design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which ohkiba chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Egpad without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
