About the Wren universal PCB

Wren universal is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by oliviahanley, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 227.7 × 112.8 mm, with 97 components from 10 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the EGG PRO MICRO, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the Elite-C. By type, the board carries 45 diodes, 2 ICs, 2 resistors, 1 connector and 1 switch.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

From the project

A split ergonomic keyboard with options for numpad, nav cluster, and more.

My primary keyboard for the last few years has been Prime Keyboards' primeo, before which I used a handwired Planck. On both I made pretty heavy use of the numpad. I grew to appreciate the prime\o's physical one, though, mostly because I spend a lot of time in Excel at my day job and like using the mouse and numpad simultaneously. I've been wanting to switch to ergo for a while, but I was annoyed by the thought of having to use a separate numpad to recreate that experience. This project was an attempt to solve that problem.

Wren universal: common questions

What microcontroller does the Wren universal use?

The Wren universal is built around the EGG PRO MICRO, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Wren universal PCB?

The Wren universal measures 227.7 × 112.8 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Wren universal?

97 components, from 10 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Wren universal design files?

From the oliviahanley/wren-keyboard repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Wren universal design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which oliviahanley chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Wren universal without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
