About the Direct drive-LEDs PCB

Direct drive-LEDs is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by RepRapLtd, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 101.6 × 53.3 mm, with 43 components from 14 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Arduino_Mega2560_Shield, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the TLC2722. By type, the board carries 21 resistors, 8 transistors, 6 capacitors, 4 diodes, 2 ICs and 1 connector.

From the project

Project to make a photonic neural network using photochromic material for the synaptic weighting adjustments

This is a project to create a neuromorphic analoge neural network. I wanted to get away from using conventional computers (including parallel graphics processors) to do neural simulations and to make something that is a lot more like a real brain.

What I propose is similar to the early work on perceptrons by Rosenblatt from the 1950s that has now been all but abandoned because today it’s much easier to solve a problem by writing some software to do it than by designing and building some electronics to do it. Easier maybe, but at least today we have the advantage of 21st Century electronics.

Direct drive-LEDs: common questions

What microcontroller does the Direct drive-LEDs use?

The Direct drive-LEDs is built around the Arduino_Mega2560_Shield, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Direct drive-LEDs PCB?

The Direct drive-LEDs measures 101.6 × 53.3 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Direct drive-LEDs?

43 components, from 14 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Direct drive-LEDs design files?

From the RepRapLtd/AnalogueNeuralNet repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Direct drive-LEDs design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which RepRapLtd chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Direct drive-LEDs without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
