About the Replica datanetics PCB

Replica datanetics is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by schlae, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 298.5 × 139.7 mm, with 145 components from 68 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATmega644P-20P, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the NE555P. By type, the board carries 77 connectors, 56 switches, 6 resistors, 3 ICs and 3 capacitors.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

Replica Datanetics ASCII keyboard

Do you need a Datanetics ASCII keyboard for your computer project (such as a replica Apple 1)? Don't want to pay high prices for an original Datanetics keyboard? Then consider building this replica.

This is not the first replica Datanetics keyboard. Mike Willegal designed one. In fact, I started with his design and redid it using KiCad. Instead of using the expensive, fragile, and hard-to-find MM5740 keyboard chip, I switched to a more common microcontroller: the ATMega644P. I also removed the output buffer chips--just in case you want to redo my firmware and implement some other keyboard…

Replica datanetics: common questions

What microcontroller does the Replica datanetics use?

The Replica datanetics is built around the ATmega644P-20P, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Replica datanetics PCB?

The Replica datanetics measures 298.5 × 139.7 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Replica datanetics?

145 components, from 68 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Replica datanetics design files?

From the schlae/replica-datanetics repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Replica datanetics design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with schlae. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Replica datanetics without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
