About the OpenSkySim PCB

OpenSkySim is an open source STM32 PCB design by shaise, published on GitHub under the LGPL-2.1 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 36 × 20 mm, with 33 components from 22 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the STM32F103C8Tx, from the STM32 family. Other key parts include the MCP1700 and CC2500_MOD8_ANT. By type, the board carries 11 resistors, 10 capacitors, 3 ICs, 3 connectors, 3 diodes and 2 switches.

It belongs with the iot & wireless and rf & radio designs in this gallery.

A wireless USB dongle for RC flight simulators. Supports PhoenixRC.

Order the PCB by sending the gerber files to a manufacturer of your choice. I recommend JLCPCB. Order all parts as listed in the BOM file. You will need a 0603 kit of resistors and capacitors, and for all other parts you will find a link in the BOM. Solder all parts. You can use the Interactive BOM to assist you. For the transmitter module, I used one without built in antenna, So if you are using the same module, you will need to add an antenna by soldering a 0.5mm transformer wire to the antenna pin, then trim the wire to a length of 31.5mm. (I tried one module with on board antenna but the…

OpenSkySim: common questions

What microcontroller does the OpenSkySim use?

The OpenSkySim is built around the STM32F103C8Tx, from the STM32 family.

How big is the OpenSkySim PCB?

The OpenSkySim measures 36 × 20 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the OpenSkySim?

33 components, from 22 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the OpenSkySim design files?

From the shaise/OpenSkySim repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the OpenSkySim design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its LGPL-2.1 license, which shaise chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the OpenSkySim without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
