Modified OpenFlops specifically to replace Citizen W1D drives

OpenFlops W1D is a complete modification for the original OpenFlops specifically configured for use replacing the flaky Citizen W1D floppy drives, popularly used in Compaq LTE Elite laptops.

For a lot more detail, installation and usage guides, visit https://silvestron.com/openflops-w1d/

While this design is specifically made for the W1D when used in an LTE Elite laptop, it definitely can be used with any other floppy drive that uses the 26-pin FPC connector, it just may not fit in the same space. Heed caution.

OpenFlops-W1D: common questions

What microcontroller does the OpenFlops-W1D use?

The OpenFlops-W1D is built around the STM32F105RBT6, from the STM32 family.

How big is the OpenFlops-W1D PCB?

The OpenFlops-W1D measures 95 × 116 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the OpenFlops-W1D?

49 components, from 22 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the OpenFlops-W1D design files?

From the silvervest/OpenFlops-W1D repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the OpenFlops-W1D design in my own project?

It is published under Custom license, which limits how it may be reused; read the license before building on it.

Can I test firmware for the OpenFlops-W1D without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
