About the Highway-Keyboard PCB

Highway-Keyboard is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by SomeonetookVeracles, published on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 364.6 × 139.2 mm, with 193 components from 15 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATMEGA32U4-A, from the AVR/Arduino family. By type, the board carries 87 switches, 87 diodes, 7 capacitors, 7 resistors, 1 IC and 1 crystal.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

From the project

Keyboard for Hack Club: Highway

I'm building a minimalistic keyboard, something simple and stripped down. It's my first time working on a large PCB, and I kept getting distracted by feature creep and add-ons. So I'm going back to basics. I want this to be a barebones board that helps me sharpen my skills and really dial in the core of what makes a great keyboard.

I learned a lot while doing this, and explored concepts like impedence matching and zones, something that I've done before but never really had to prioritize.

Highway-Keyboard: common questions

What microcontroller does the Highway-Keyboard use?

The Highway-Keyboard is built around the ATMEGA32U4-A, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Highway-Keyboard PCB?

The Highway-Keyboard measures 364.6 × 139.2 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Highway-Keyboard?

193 components, from 15 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Highway-Keyboard design files?

From the SomeonetookVeracles/Highway-Keyboard repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Highway-Keyboard design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its Apache-2.0 license, which SomeonetookVeracles chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Highway-Keyboard without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
