About the AVR488 PCB

AVR488 is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by VE7PMC, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 86 × 70 mm, with 24 components from 18 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATmega168-20P, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the MCP2221AxP, SN75161BN and SN75160BN. By type, the board carries 6 capacitors, 5 connectors, 5 resistors, 4 ICs, 3 diodes and 1 switch.

It belongs with the usb & debug tools designs in this gallery.

USB to IEEE-488 interface based on the ATmega168/328 microcontroller

A PrologixTM compatible(ish) USB to IEEE 488/GPIB/HP-IB controller interface based on the ATmega168/328 microcontroller.

I designed the AVR488 interface so that I could communicate with my various legacy Hewlett Packard / Agilent test instruments. There are numerous Arduino-based variations of USB/IEEE 488 interfaces out there already, but I prefer programming AVR devices down at the "bare metal" level using C code, so I came up with this version. Since it's necessary to construct a physical interface for the IEEE 488 connector anyway, it's easy enough to add an ATmega and driver ICs into…

AVR488: common questions

What microcontroller does the AVR488 use?

The AVR488 is built around the ATmega168-20P, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the AVR488 PCB?

The AVR488 measures 86 × 70 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.69 mm thick.

How many components are on the AVR488?

24 components, from 18 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the AVR488 design files?

From the VE7PMC/AVR488 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the AVR488 design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which VE7PMC chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the AVR488 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
