About the Model m controller hbb PCB

Model m controller hbb is an open source STM32 PCB design by yatharthsood00, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 145 × 50 mm, with 32 components from 23 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the STM32F072CBT6, from the STM32 family. Other key parts include the XC6206P332MR-G. By type, the board carries 11 capacitors, 7 resistors, 5 connectors, 2 ICs, 2 transistors and 2 diodes.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

From the project

A drop-in replacement USB-C based controller for the IBM Model M. Compatible with the 101-key and SSK versions only.

This is a drop-in replacement controller for the IBM Model M with QMK and VIAL support. I designed this for myself, and my own Models M, as well as some that I have sold/gifted to friends in the custom keyboard community, which is why this is designed only for the Models M that I own (the 101 key ANSI version, and the Space Saving Keyboard).

Status (28-02-2026): PCBA produced via JLCPCB and delivered. Using without issues! TODO figuring out how to make the solenoid work.

Model m controller hbb: common questions

What microcontroller does the Model m controller hbb use?

The Model m controller hbb is built around the STM32F072CBT6, from the STM32 family.

How big is the Model m controller hbb PCB?

The Model m controller hbb measures 145 × 50 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Model m controller hbb?

32 components, from 23 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Model m controller hbb design files?

From the yatharthsood00/model-m-hbb repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Model m controller hbb design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which yatharthsood00 chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Model m controller hbb without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
