About the Outta ctrl PCB
Outta ctrl is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by a-hungrybookworm, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 346.5 × 117.9 mm, with 130 components from 6 distinct parts.
Its main chip is the RaspberryPi_Pico, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. By type, the board carries 67 switches, 62 diodes and 1 module.
It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.
From the project
A custom 64-key linear mechanical keyboard.
A custom 64-key linear mechanical keyboard designed from scratch - including a custom PCB, case, firmware, and even keycaps.
I then designed the PCB in KiCAD. I initially figured out which libraries/ footprints to use, connected them to form the keyboard matrix (row-to-col) and finally arranged the components and routed the traces.
Next, I learnt how to 3D model in Onshape, while simultaneously modelling the case. I used a sandwich mount for its simplicity, and split the case into two mutually screwable sections, as it was too big for the bed size. This will help in easy assembly and…

Outta ctrl: common questions
What microcontroller does the Outta ctrl use?
The Outta ctrl is built around the RaspberryPi_Pico, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.
How big is the Outta ctrl PCB?
The Outta ctrl measures 346.5 × 117.9 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.
How many components are on the Outta ctrl?
130 components, from 6 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.
Where can I download the Outta ctrl design files?
From the a-hungrybookworm/outta-ctrl repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.
Can I use the Outta ctrl design in my own project?
The repository has no license, so all rights stay with a-hungrybookworm. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.
Can I test firmware for the Outta ctrl without the hardware?
Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
