About the Pico-2x-BLDC PCB

Pico-2x-BLDC is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by AmericanRework, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 147.8 × 77 mm, with 118 components from 21 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Pico, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the IRS2304, INA180A3IDBVR and XC6220B331MR. By type, the board carries 28 capacitors, 26 resistors, 23 connectors, 19 diodes, 12 transistors and 10 ICs.

It belongs with the robotics & motion designs in this gallery.

From the project

One RP2040 Pico drives two brushless motors! SimpleFOC + Halls + 2304 drivers + TO-220 mosfets or IGBTs. Plugs directly into 450x automower motors. Trying for low cost + lots of flexibility + solder it at home + repairable. Works as a 3x DC motor controller as well.

RP2040 Pico running Simplefoc (https://simplefoc.com/) and using halls (or -untested but should be possible- encoders) for motor commutation. (No FOC - RP2040 doesn't have enough A/D channels for 2x motor FOC.) Current sensing: 1 A/D channel and shunt resistor per motor. Uses 2304 half-H drivers. Can assemble only half the board if you only want one servo amp / want more pico I/O's. Spot for big diodes if you want 'em - Big motors seem to eat my mosfet body diodes rather quickly and IGBT's don't have body diodes.

Pico-2x-BLDC: common questions

What microcontroller does the Pico-2x-BLDC use?

The Pico-2x-BLDC is built around the Pico, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Pico-2x-BLDC PCB?

The Pico-2x-BLDC measures 147.8 × 77 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Pico-2x-BLDC?

118 components, from 21 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Pico-2x-BLDC design files?

From the AmericanRework/Pico-2x-BLDC repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Pico-2x-BLDC design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with AmericanRework. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Pico-2x-BLDC without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
