About the FalCAN PCB

FalCAN is an open source STM32 PCB design by AndersBNielsen, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 76.5 × 30.9 mm, with 54 components from 27 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the STM32F042C6Tx, from the STM32 family. Other key parts include the SN65HVD230, SP3485EN and MIC5504-3.3YM5. By type, the board carries 18 resistors, 14 capacitors, 9 connectors, 5 ICs, 2 crystals and 2 jumpers.

It belongs with the usb & debug tools designs in this gallery.

From the project

The FalCAN Probe does USB to CAN, RS-485 and full duplex RS-422

A compact USB 2.0 to CAN/RS‑485/RS‑422 hardware probe for interfacing and debugging CAN networks and differential serial buses. Designed in KiCad 9. Firmware is here:

Project metadata - Title: FalCAN Probe - Company: ABNielsen.com - Revision: 0 - Board: 4‑layer FR4, ~1.6 mm

If JP4 is closed at reset, USB is CDC USART1 for RS422/485. If JP4 in open, USB is GS_USB CAN

FalCAN: common questions

What microcontroller does the FalCAN use?

The FalCAN is built around the STM32F042C6Tx, from the STM32 family.

How big is the FalCAN PCB?

The FalCAN measures 76.5 × 30.9 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the FalCAN?

54 components, from 27 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the FalCAN design files?

From the AndersBNielsen/FalCAN repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the FalCAN design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with AndersBNielsen. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the FalCAN without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
