About the SoilSensor v2 PCB

SoilSensor v2 is an open source STM32 PCB design by angelnu, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 24.9 × 143.8 mm, with 24 components from 16 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the STM32L041K6Tx, from the STM32 family. Other key parts include the RFM95W-868S2 and SoilSonde. By type, the board carries 9 capacitors, 4 resistors, 3 ICs, 2 switches, 1 crystal and 1 connector.

It belongs with the sensors designs in this gallery, and the repository also holds 1 earlier revision of it.

From the project

LoraWan soil sensor

This device includes a capacitive sonde in the same PCB. The resulting device can measure the soil moisture without beeing corroded nor being affected by the temperature as the resistive soil sensors.

- sleep: 1.5 uA - run: 415 uA at 4 MHz - 20 ms for measurement - 2 seconds waiting for reception - Sending; 120 mA during 50 ms - Sending each 60 minutes (at least moisture level changess fast - watering, raining) - Battery: 1400 mAh

SoilSensor v2: common questions

What microcontroller does the SoilSensor v2 use?

The SoilSensor v2 is built around the STM32L041K6Tx, from the STM32 family.

How big is the SoilSensor v2 PCB?

The SoilSensor v2 measures 24.9 × 143.8 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the SoilSensor v2?

24 components, from 16 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the SoilSensor v2 design files?

From the angelnu/LorawanSensor repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the SoilSensor v2 design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which angelnu chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the SoilSensor v2 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
