About the Master thesis PCB

Master thesis is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by anniberi, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 160 × 100 mm, with 23 components from 14 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Arduino_UNO_R3, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the MCP4921-EP and LM358. By type, the board carries 11 connectors, 8 resistors, 2 ICs, 1 module and 1 transistor.

It belongs with the power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

Master's thesis: device for measuring the series resistance of PV panels. This device uses a MOSFET transistor as a variable load to measure the I-V curve of the PV panel. A custom PCB is developed, Arduino firmware and Python I-V curve fitting using the single-diode equation.

Master's thesis project covering the full development of a low-cost device that measures the series resistance of photovoltaic panels: from the single-diode model and simulation, through two prototypes, to a home-etched final PCB tested in the field. An IRFP250M MOSFET acts as an electronically controlled variable load that sweeps the panel's I-V curve in milliseconds. An Arduino UNO drives it through an MCP4921 DAC and an op-amp control loop and reads voltage and current with an ADS1115 ADC. A Python Nelder-Mead fit of the single-diode model then estimates the series resistance, and a field…

Master thesis: common questions

What microcontroller does the Master thesis use?

The Master thesis is built around the Arduino_UNO_R3, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Master thesis PCB?

The Master thesis measures 160 × 100 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Master thesis?

23 components, from 14 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Master thesis design files?

From the anniberi/master-thesis repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Master thesis design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with anniberi. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Master thesis without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
