About the PCB

PCB is an open source ESP32 PCB design by arnaumora, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 185 × 115 mm, with 44 components from 25 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the Antenna_NFR. By type, the board carries 21 capacitors, 10 test points, 3 modules and 1 inductor.

It belongs with the sensors, test & measurement and rf & radio designs in this gallery.

From the project

An ESP32-S3 sensor unit, built on a custom KiCad-designed PCB, estimates aircraft attitude, heading, altitude and vertical speed in real time and streams them over a 2.4 GHz RF link to a Primary Flight Display (PFD) that renders a Basic-T instrument layout with a moving map.

Bachelor's thesis (TFG), Aerospace Vehicle Engineering, UPC - ESEIAAT.

- End-to-end latency (sensor to display) under 200 ms - Display refresh rate above 60 FPS - Total hardware cost under 100 EUR (custom PCB plus off-the-shelf sensors) - Fully open-source: custom hardware and firmware

PCB: common questions

What microcontroller does the PCB use?

The PCB is built around the ESP32-S3, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the PCB?

The PCB measures 185 × 115 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the PCB?

44 components, from 25 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the PCB design files?

From the arnaumora/TFG-Plataforma-Instrumentacion-Avionica repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the PCB design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which arnaumora chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the PCB without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
