About the Model-M-Type-C PCB

Model-M-Type-C is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by ashpil, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 118.3 × 38.9 mm, with 22 components from 16 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the AT90USB1286-AU, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the PRTR5V0U2X. By type, the board carries 7 capacitors, 6 resistors, 3 connectors, 2 ICs, 1 crystal and 1 fuse.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

A modern yet simple Model M replacement controller

1. Print the board either using a cheap foreign service such as JLCPBC for around $6 + shipping, or a domestic service such as OSH Park for around $35. Someone also seems to be selling a PCB for this on eBay, which is totally a scam for $47.95. Does make me feel flattered, though. 2. Order the components- part list from Digikey. USB-C port needs to be bought elsewhere, I recommend here. $15 total for components. If your LEDs connect via a ribbon, get this instead of the JST 4 pin connector. I used this cable as a riser cable to connect the controller's USB C port to the side of the keyboard.…

Model-M-Type-C: common questions

What microcontroller does the Model-M-Type-C use?

The Model-M-Type-C is built around the AT90USB1286-AU, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Model-M-Type-C PCB?

The Model-M-Type-C measures 118.3 × 38.9 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Model-M-Type-C?

22 components, from 16 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Model-M-Type-C design files?

From the ashpil/Model-M-Type-C repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Model-M-Type-C design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which ashpil chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Model-M-Type-C without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
