About the Wired sculpt PCB

Wired sculpt is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by chadaustin, published on GitHub under the TAPR-OHL-1.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 40 × 50 mm, with 35 components from 25 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the AT90USB1286-AU, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the USBLC6-2SC6 and LM2776DBVT. By type, the board carries 12 capacitors, 12 resistors, 3 ICs, 2 transistors, 2 connectors and 2 switches.

This repository contains the schematic and layout files for the Microsoft Sculpt Wired Conversion Mod.

When I upgraded the 30-pin ribbon connector to one that fit better, it lowered the resistance to the LEDs. This caused me to burn the microcontroller on a test rev3 board by drawing too much current. So the question became: what values are appropriate for "maximum" brightness on both red and green. Today I found that, given a 5.15V VUSB, whatever resistance in the flex cable, and whatever voltage drop on the LEDs, 150 Ohms gives an even brightness on both red and green. Green draws about 15…

Wired sculpt: common questions

What microcontroller does the Wired sculpt use?

The Wired sculpt is built around the AT90USB1286-AU, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Wired sculpt PCB?

The Wired sculpt measures 40 × 50 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 0.8 mm thick.

How many components are on the Wired sculpt?

35 components, from 25 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Wired sculpt design files?

From the chadaustin/wired-sculpt-pcb repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Wired sculpt design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its TAPR-OHL-1.0 license, which chadaustin chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Wired sculpt without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
