About the SRAM SIMM 16MB PCB

SRAM SIMM 16MB is an open source PCB design by codesmythe, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 108 × 25.4 mm, with 36 components from 8 distinct parts.

Other key parts include the SamacSys_Parts_72p-SIMM, SN74LVC16245ADGGR, IS66WVE4M16EBLL-70BLI, SN74LVC08APWR and TLV75533PDBV. By type, the board carries 26 capacitors and 10 ICs.

It belongs with the retro computing designs in this gallery.

From the project

A 16MB 72-pin "SRAM SIMM" module that presents a static RAM interface to its host system.

I have designed my own take on a retro Motorola 68000-based single-board computer, as seen here. The original version of the board incorporated one megabyte of memory, a common feature in homebrew 68000 SBCs. I wanted access to more memory for my board, but did not want the complexity of using dynamic RAM or the board space involved in adding more static memory. I came across pseudo-static RAM (PSRAM) chips, specifically the IS66WVE4M16EBLL, which internally function as DRAM but employ an SRAM-style interface to the system. Essentially, these chips contain embedded DRAM controllers. It made…
