About the FuelGauge PCB

FuelGauge is an open source PIC PCB design by davefiddes, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 94 × 44 mm, with 27 components from 24 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the PIC12F1840-IP, from the PIC family. Other key parts include the LM317L_TO92 and LM7805_TO220. By type, the board carries 7 diodes, 6 capacitors, 6 resistors, 3 ICs, 2 transistors and 2 connectors.

From the project

An Open Source Hardware and Software device to provide a linear fuel gauge for cars with oddly shaped fuel tanks.

This project allows an accurate linear fuel readout to be created for vehicles with unusually shaped fuel tanks and/or mismatched fuel senders.

I built this for my Ultima GTR kit car which uses a conventional VDO fuel gauge and vertical float sender unit. The fuel tank on the car is a very unusual shape so it can get as much fuel as possible into a small space. This combination means that with a thirsty V8 the fuel quickly drops from 100% to 25% but takes a lot longer to go from 25% to empty. It's easy to run out of fuel!

FuelGauge: common questions

What microcontroller does the FuelGauge use?

The FuelGauge is built around the PIC12F1840-IP, from the PIC family.

How big is the FuelGauge PCB?

The FuelGauge measures 94 × 44 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the FuelGauge?

27 components, from 24 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the FuelGauge design files?

From the davefiddes/FuelGauge repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the FuelGauge design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which davefiddes chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the FuelGauge without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug PIC firmware against it before you order a PCB.
