About the Smartportsd nano shield

Smartportsd nano shield is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by djtersteegc, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 69.9 × 55.9 mm, with 17 components from 14 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Arduino_Nano_v3.x, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the CARD-SD-ADAPTER-CATALEX. By type, the board carries 6 resistors, 5 diodes, 2 modules, 1 connector, 1 jumper and 1 switch.

It belongs with the dev boards & breakouts designs in this gallery.

From the project

Various PCB and case designs of the SmartPortSD hard disk emulator for Apple II computers.

All components can be sourced from the usual low-cost China based vendors for a total build cost of around $10. An interactive BOM and parts placement diagram is available.

I've had good luck with the ~$2 Chinese clones, but I would suggest flashing it first before soldering to the board. Sometimes you do get a bad unit, or a unit that hasn't been flashed with the boot loader and requires you flash it yourself via the ICSP headers.

Smartportsd nano shield: common questions

What microcontroller does the Smartportsd nano shield use?

The Smartportsd nano shield is built around the Arduino_Nano_v3.x, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Smartportsd nano shield?

The Smartportsd nano shield measures 69.9 × 55.9 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Smartportsd nano shield?

17 components, from 14 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Smartportsd nano shield design files?

From the djtersteegc/smartportsd repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Smartportsd nano shield design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which djtersteegc chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Smartportsd nano shield without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
