About the SmartPortSD SMD PCB

SmartPortSD SMD is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by djtersteegc, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 41 × 50 mm, with 24 components from 14 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATMEGA328P-A, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the 4050 and AMS1117-3.3. By type, the board carries 8 capacitors, 8 resistors, 3 ICs, 2 connectors, 1 crystal and 1 switch.

From the project

Various PCB and case designs of the SmartPortSD hard disk emulator for Apple II computers.

There's an interactive BOM here, and CSV version with footprint info here. The interactive one is super useful when placing the SMD components.

C5 is an optional bulk capacitor for the 5V power rail near the MCU. In my experience building these it is not needed.

The SD card connector is commonly available from several different Chinese suppliers and often called "long body", "non popping", or "push pull" on AliExpress or eBay.

SmartPortSD SMD: common questions

What microcontroller does the SmartPortSD SMD use?

The SmartPortSD SMD is built around the ATMEGA328P-A, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the SmartPortSD SMD PCB?

The SmartPortSD SMD measures 41 × 50 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the SmartPortSD SMD?

24 components, from 14 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the SmartPortSD SMD design files?

From the djtersteegc/smartportsd repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the SmartPortSD SMD design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which djtersteegc chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the SmartPortSD SMD without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
