About the Workboy PCB

Workboy is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by dmang-dev, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 152 × 106.1 mm, with 131 components from 15 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the C14877, from the AVR/Arduino family. By type, the board carries 54 diodes, 53 switches, 11 resistors, 6 capacitors, 3 connectors and 3 LEDs.

It belongs with the keyboards and retro computing designs in this gallery.

From the project

Open, buildable recreation of Nintendo's unreleased Game Boy WorkBoy keyboard: firmware, clean-room ROM, DRC-clean PCB, 3D case, CI

An open recreation of Nintendo's unreleased Game Boy WorkBoy keyboard accessory (Source R&D / Fabtek / Montague‑Weston, 1992): a QWERTY keyboard that plugs into the Game Boy Link Port and turns the console into a PDA, plus a software cartridge.

This repo contains a complete, buildable and CI‑verified design — firmware, a clean‑room ROM, a DRC‑clean PCB, a 3D‑printed case, and an assembly‑ready BOM.

Workboy: common questions

What microcontroller does the Workboy use?

The Workboy is built around the C14877, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Workboy PCB?

The Workboy measures 152 × 106.1 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Workboy?

131 components, from 15 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Workboy design files?

From the dmang-dev/workboy repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Workboy design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which dmang-dev chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Workboy without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
