About the Makropad PCB

Makropad is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by doenertrinker909, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 137.2 × 82.6 mm, with 53 components from 7 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Sparkfun_Pro_Micro, from the AVR/Arduino family. By type, the board carries 18 switches, 16 LEDs, 16 diodes, 1 IC, 1 connector and 1 resistor.

It belongs with the displays & leds and keyboards designs in this gallery.

A macropad featuring a 4x4 grid of keys, two rotary encoders and a 128x32 OLED display

A minimalistic makropad featuring a 4x4 grid of keys, two rotary encoders and a 128x32 OLED display.

You can put most makropad-like keyboards in two categories:

Way too expensive and overbloated with useless features

An ok price but an ugly design (in my opinion)

That's what motivated me to make my own makropad. It's designed to be easily built, having just the right amount of features all while having a sleek minimalistic design.

Makropad: common questions

What microcontroller does the Makropad use?

The Makropad is built around the Sparkfun_Pro_Micro, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Makropad PCB?

The Makropad measures 137.2 × 82.6 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Makropad?

53 components, from 7 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Makropad design files?

From the doenertrinker909/Makropad repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Makropad design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with doenertrinker909. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Makropad without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
