About the Athena-8-Bit-Computer PCB

Athena-8-Bit-Computer is an open source PCB design by efcroasdell, published on GitHub under the Custom license license. It is a board, with 26 components from 19 distinct parts.

Other key parts include the NE556, SN7400, SN74LS157N and CD40106BE. By type, the board carries 9 resistors, 7 capacitors, 4 ICs, 3 switches and 2 diodes.

It belongs with the test & measurement, retro computing and dev boards & breakouts designs in this gallery.

From the project

Athena is a modular 8-bit computer engineering project focused on learning processor architecture, digital logic and hardware/software interaction through hands-on design, measurement and verification. The repository contains schematics, breadboard records, test evidence, logic-analyser captures, firmware, fault reports and design documentation.

Updated 24 September 2026 for KiCad 10.0.3. Open Athena.kicadpro` and then its schematic.

- Clock (Clock.kicadsch): complete continuously wired clock circuit, including the CD40106BE STEP conditioner. - Clock logic (Clock-logic.kicadsch): functional diagram, excluded from the electrical circuit, BOM and board. - Z80 bring-up (Z80-Bringup.kicadsch): documented NMOS Z80A forced-NOP bench circuit. CPUCLK connects to the Clock sheet through the top-level hierarchy. - Manual instruction source (Manual-Instruction-Source.kicadsch): standalone experimental board, with recorded IC1 wiring and the…
