About the Labrador backup PCB

Labrador backup is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by EspoTek, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 36.8 × 34.7 mm, with 75 components from 28 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATXMEGA32A4U-AU, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the 78L05, LM324 and DMN63D8LDW. By type, the board carries 32 resistors, 18 capacitors, 11 connectors, 5 ICs, 4 inductors and 2 fuses.

The intention is to move to a less restrictive licence in future, where commercial hardware derivatives are allowed but the use of the Labrador name or any branding is not. If anyone knows how to implement such a licence, I'm all ears.

Labrador backup: common questions

What microcontroller does the Labrador backup use?

The Labrador backup is built around the ATXMEGA32A4U-AU, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Labrador backup PCB?

The Labrador backup measures 36.8 × 34.7 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Labrador backup?

75 components, from 28 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Labrador backup design files?

From the EspoTek/Labrador_backup repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Labrador backup design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with EspoTek. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Labrador backup without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
