About the Reference Keyboard PCB

Reference Keyboard is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by famichu, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 176 × 105 mm, with 79 components from 27 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the W25Q16JVSSIM and LM1117RS-3.3. By type, the board carries 28 switches, 17 capacitors, 12 resistors, 10 diodes, 3 ICs and 3 connectors.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

From the project

The reference keyboard for the MagLev Switch MX

- 2. Insert switches through a top plate.

- 3. Place the bottom switch cap onto the bottom case (Insert nuts into holes on the bottom plate if you print it by yourself.).

- 5. Insert an OLED module with a flex PCB into the top case (Insert nuts into holes on the top plate if you print it by yourself).

- 6. Connect the flex-PCB with the main PCB.

- 7. Close the top and bottom cases with screws.

Reference Keyboard: common questions

What microcontroller does the Reference Keyboard use?

The Reference Keyboard is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Reference Keyboard PCB?

The Reference Keyboard measures 176 × 105 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Reference Keyboard?

79 components, from 27 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Reference Keyboard design files?

From the famichu/MagLevSwitch_ReferenceKeyboard repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Reference Keyboard design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which famichu chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Reference Keyboard without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
