About the Xgsail e1 PCB

Xgsail e1 is an open source ESP32 PCB design by FForzano, published on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 60.5 × 91.5 mm, with 17 components from 10 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32DEVIKITV1, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the Hosyond_3.5_ST7796U. By type, the board carries 10 connectors, 4 resistors, 2 ICs and 1 switch.

It belongs with the iot & wireless, rf & radio and sensors designs in this gallery.

From the project

Open-hardware ESP32 sailing tracker (E1): GNSS/IMU/wind/pressure logging, ESP-NOW mesh for live fleet position + race-start detection, BLE/WiFi upload. Firmware, KiCad PCB, and a published TypeScript client SDK.

E1 device firmware and hardware for XGSail — an ESP32 sailboat tracker: GNSS + IMU + wind + pressure logging, an ESP-NOW peer mesh for live fleet position sharing and on-course-side (OCS) race-start detection, and uploads over the XGSail device protocol — direct over WiFi, or relayed over BLE by the owner's phone when WiFi isn't available.

xgsail-e1 is the firmware and PCB design for one specific device: E1, an ESP32-based fleet tracker.

Xgsail e1: common questions

What microcontroller does the Xgsail e1 use?

The Xgsail e1 is built around the ESP32DEVIKITV1, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Xgsail e1 PCB?

The Xgsail e1 measures 60.5 × 91.5 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Xgsail e1?

17 components, from 10 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Xgsail e1 design files?

From the FForzano/xgsail-e1 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Xgsail e1 design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its Apache-2.0 license, which FForzano chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Xgsail e1 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
