About the FgFocus PCB

FgFocus is an open source Microchip SAM PCB design by GrussmayerLab, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 44.6 × 44.6 mm, with 7 components from 6 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the XIAO-SAMD21-SMD, from the Microchip SAM family. By type, the board carries 3 resistors, 2 connectors, 1 IC and 1 capacitor.

From the project

Focus Lock for Micro-Manager

fgFocus is an active focus-lock system designed to maintain sharp focus during extended imaging experiments, such as single-molecule and live-cell imaging. It corrects axial drift (movement along the Z-axis) that can occur over time, ensuring your sample stays perfectly in focus.

This project is inspired by similar systems like qgFocus and pgFocus and follows the same naming convention.

FgFocus: common questions

What microcontroller does the FgFocus use?

The FgFocus is built around the XIAO-SAMD21-SMD, from the Microchip SAM family.

How big is the FgFocus PCB?

The FgFocus measures 44.6 × 44.6 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the FgFocus?

7 components, from 6 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the FgFocus design files?

From the GrussmayerLab/fgFocus repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the FgFocus design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with GrussmayerLab. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the FgFocus without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Microchip SAM firmware against it before you order a PCB.
