About the Fpgaboy PCB

Fpgaboy is an open source Microchip SAM PCB design by Wren6991, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 50 × 50 mm, with 89 components from 30 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the SAML22G18A, from the Microchip SAM family. Other key parts include the iCE40-HX8k-BG121, DSC60XX, GS74116AGP/, BQ21040 and NCP1532. By type, the board carries 30 capacitors, 24 resistors, 15 test points, 8 connectors, 6 ICs and 2 diodes.

It belongs with the retro computing designs in this gallery.

From the project

Portable games console, designed from scratch: CPU, graphics, PCB, and the kitchen sink

RISCBoy is an open-source portable games console, designed from scratch. This includes:

- A RISC-V compatible CPU - A raster graphics pipeline and display controller - Other chip infrastructure: busfabric, memory controllers, UART, GPIO etc. - A PCB layout in KiCad

It is a Gameboy Advance from a parallel universe where RISC-V existed in 2001. A love letter to the handheld consoles from my childhood, and a 3AM drunk text to the technology that powered them.

Fpgaboy: common questions

What microcontroller does the Fpgaboy use?

The Fpgaboy is built around the SAML22G18A, from the Microchip SAM family.

How big is the Fpgaboy PCB?

The Fpgaboy measures 50 × 50 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Fpgaboy?

89 components, from 30 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Fpgaboy design files?

From the Wren6991/RISCBoy repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Fpgaboy design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with Wren6991. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Fpgaboy without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Microchip SAM firmware against it before you order a PCB.
