About the Stno PCB

Stno is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by Heinrich-XIAO, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 143.2 × 113.5 mm, with 78 components from 5 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ARDUINO_NANO_ESP32, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the COM-09032. By type, the board carries 50 diodes, 25 switches, 2 ICs and 1 module.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

I wanted to make stno because I became obsessed with steno, didn't have an n-key roll over keyboard and i didnt want to keep arpegiating, and i wanted a one-handed keyboard like my other keyboards (all of them were too small for a steno layout). I wanted to use joysticks since i feel like holding two keys with one finger is awkward and wanted to minimize it, especially for the thumb.

Stno: common questions

What microcontroller does the Stno use?

The Stno is built around the ARDUINO_NANO_ESP32, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Stno PCB?

The Stno measures 143.2 × 113.5 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Stno?

78 components, from 5 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Stno design files?

From the Heinrich-XIAO/stno repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Stno design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with Heinrich-XIAO. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Stno without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
