About the Tanen PCB

Tanen is an open source Nordic nRF PCB design by hmd83, published on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 53 × 45 mm, with 7 components from 7 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the XIAO-nRF54l15, from the Nordic nRF family. By type, the board carries 4 connectors, 2 ICs and 1 resistor.

It belongs with the iot & wireless, rf & radio and power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

LoRaWAN beehive monitor: hive weight, temperature and battery over TTN. Seeed XIAO nRF54LM20A + SX1262, Zephyr/nRF Connect SDK. ~4 uA sleep, ~10 year life on 3X AAA cell. Includes KiCad hardware and a Web Bluetooth config app.

KiCad 7+ project for the TanenBase carrier board — the passive breakout that holds the XIAO module, the Wio-SX1262 LoRa kit, the load-cell terminal block, the DS18B20 terminal block, and the battery connections.

Because the board does not care, and renaming it would invalidate a PCB that has already been fabricated and verified.

The Seeed Studio XIAO family is a fixed mechanical and electrical standard: all XIAO modules share the same 21 × 17.5 mm outline, the same two 7-pin 2.54 mm headers, and the same pin roles in the same physical positions:

Tanen: common questions

What microcontroller does the Tanen use?

The Tanen is built around the XIAO-nRF54l15, from the Nordic nRF family.

How big is the Tanen PCB?

The Tanen measures 53 × 45 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Tanen?

7 components, from 7 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Tanen design files?

From the hmd83/tanen repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Tanen design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its Apache-2.0 license, which hmd83 chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Tanen without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Nordic nRF firmware against it before you order a PCB.
