ProtoPCB Code and Evaluation Files

This repository contains our tests, evaluation files, and software tool (ProtoPCB) presented in the paper "ProtoPCB: Reclaiming Printed Circuit Board E-waste as Prototyping Material", which will appear at CHI2025. This tool was built by Jasmine Lu (@xjasminelu), Sai Rishitha Boddu (@rishiboddu) with project assistance from Pedro Lopes at the University of Chicago's Human Computer Integration Lab.

Adafruit Circuit Playground: common questions

What microcontroller does the Adafruit Circuit Playground use?

The Adafruit Circuit Playground is built around the ATMEGA32U4-MU, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Adafruit Circuit Playground PCB?

The Adafruit Circuit Playground measures 61 × 60 mm, has 16 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Adafruit Circuit Playground?

78 components, from 40 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Adafruit Circuit Playground design files?

From the humancomputerintegration/ProtoPCB repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Adafruit Circuit Playground design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which humancomputerintegration chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Adafruit Circuit Playground without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
