About the Battery PCB

Battery is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by iam4722202468, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 17.8 × 26 mm, with 10 components from 7 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATtiny85-20SU, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the LD1117S33TR_SOT223. By type, the board carries 4 resistors, 2 ICs, 2 connectors and 2 capacitors.

It belongs with the power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

Open source Thinkpad T420 battery design

This is a fully open source laptop battery design. The design uses an attiny85, which can reply to the T420 motherboard's SMBUS requests.

- BATTERYCAPACITY | Your battery capacity in mAH - VHIGH | The highest output voltage of your battery, normally 12.6v - V_LOW | The cutoff for when the battery will stop working, normally around 10.8v

Parts Needed - Arduino Uno/Mega (for programming the attiny85, Mega needs different pin assignment) - 12v Lithium-Ion battery pack - 3S Lithium-Ion BMS (it might be possible to use the existing bms if specification is available but communication needs to be…

Battery: common questions

What microcontroller does the Battery use?

The Battery is built around the ATtiny85-20SU, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Battery PCB?

The Battery measures 17.8 × 26 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Battery?

10 components, from 7 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Battery design files?

From the iam4722202468/ThinkpadBattery repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Battery design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which iam4722202468 chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Battery without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
