About the Custom keyboard PCB

Custom keyboard is an open source Raspberry Pi PCB design by Ibne-billa, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 362 × 138.1 mm, with 175 components from 8 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RaspberryPi_Pico_W, from the Raspberry Pi family. By type, the board carries 84 switches, 84 diodes, 1 module and 1 resistor.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

From the project

I am a custom keyboard for hackclub keeb

For the past ~4 months, my laptop keyboard has had broken G and H keys. The replacement was very expensive, and typing on it became really frustrating. This project is my way of solving that problem while also learning PCB design and embedded systems.

Thanks again to HackClub for giving me a platform where I can express myself and build something useful instead of just dealing with a broken keyboard.

Custom keyboard: common questions

What microcontroller does the Custom keyboard use?

The Custom keyboard is built around the RaspberryPi_Pico_W, from the Raspberry Pi family.

How big is the Custom keyboard PCB?

The Custom keyboard measures 362 × 138.1 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Custom keyboard?

175 components, from 8 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Custom keyboard design files?

From the Ibne-billa/custom-keyboard repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Custom keyboard design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with Ibne-billa. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Custom keyboard without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Raspberry Pi firmware against it before you order a PCB.
