About the Firefly PCB

Firefly is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by intergalaktik, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 85 × 70.5 mm, with 50 components from 27 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Pico, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the ADM2687EBRIZ and 497-6447-1. By type, the board carries 21 capacitors, 7 connectors, 7 diodes, 5 resistors, 3 ICs and 1 fuse.

From the project

Board is designed to run custom made panels designed by Novena.

Board is designed to run custom made panels designed by Novena.

Designed to drive LED strip WS28121/WS28121

Depending on components and jumpers board can be sender or receiver.

UTP Cables are cheap and easily available.

Sender board is connected over USB to computer.

Currently sender board is just use as USB > RS485 pass

On receiver board switches are used to set panel ID

Firefly: common questions

What microcontroller does the Firefly use?

The Firefly is built around the Pico, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Firefly PCB?

The Firefly measures 85 × 70.5 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Firefly?

50 components, from 27 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Firefly design files?

From the intergalaktik/firefly repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Firefly design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which intergalaktik chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Firefly without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
