About the Refill Dispensary PCB

Refill Dispensary is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by Jackson-Wiessing, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 100 × 100 mm, with 62 components from 33 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the NCP1117-3.3_SOT223, Flash Memory, NHD-C0220BIZ and AD622. By type, the board carries 16 capacitors, 16 resistors, 14 connectors, 7 diodes, 5 ICs and 2 transistors.

This was our original schematic and PCB layout design.

This was our original schematic and PCB layout design.

This PCB wasn't great as the components were close together which made it difficult to solder. Additionally, the resistor size that we were using were way too small and required the use of tweezers and a microscope to solder them onto the PCB. In our new design, we removed the screen from being on the PCB which gave us more room to spread parts out.

Refill Dispensary: common questions

What microcontroller does the Refill Dispensary use?

The Refill Dispensary is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Refill Dispensary PCB?

The Refill Dispensary measures 100 × 100 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Refill Dispensary?

62 components, from 33 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Refill Dispensary design files?

From the Jackson-Wiessing/ECE445-Refill_Dispensary repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Refill Dispensary design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with Jackson-Wiessing. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Refill Dispensary without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
