About the USB-C-Screen-Adapter PCB

USB-C-Screen-Adapter is an open source STM32 PCB design by Jana-Marie, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 40 × 20.8 mm, with 60 components from 36 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the TPS61160A, from the STM32 family. Other key parts include the 5022505191, NE555, 1117-3.3 and STG3684A. By type, the board carries 23 capacitors, 19 resistors, 7 ICs, 4 diodes, 3 inductors and 2 transistors.

It belongs with the displays & leds designs in this gallery.

It turns out that modern screens/panels like the LP097QX1-SPA1 from LG have a eDP interface, which is only DP (DisplayPort) but without a standard connector. You can buy such a screen for ~40€ and with the OtterScreenAdapter (part cost: ~10€) you can convert it into an external 2048x1536px monitor.

USB-C-Screen-Adapter: common questions

What microcontroller does the USB-C-Screen-Adapter use?

The USB-C-Screen-Adapter is built around the TPS61160A, from the STM32 family.

How big is the USB-C-Screen-Adapter PCB?

The USB-C-Screen-Adapter measures 40 × 20.8 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the USB-C-Screen-Adapter?

60 components, from 36 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the USB-C-Screen-Adapter design files?

From the Jana-Marie/OtterScreenAdapter repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the USB-C-Screen-Adapter design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which Jana-Marie chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the USB-C-Screen-Adapter without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
