About the Main board

Main board is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by JesusFreke, published on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 42 × 67 mm, with 56 components from 24 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the C2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the C3040644, C97521, C2685541 and C7519. By type, the board carries 18 capacitors, 17 resistors, 7 ICs, 5 transistors, 4 inductors and 2 connectors.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

A 3D-printed keyboard inspired by the DataHand

Online viewer for cluster assemblies: - finger - left thumb - right thumb

The overall functionality of the lalboard is obviously heavily based on the DataHand, but I designed all of the specific key mechanisms, etc. from scratch, to be printable on a normal hobby-level FDM printer.

With my DataHand, I never felt like I could get the keys positioned quite right for my hand. So one of my primary focuses with the lalboard was adjustability. Each key cluster can be independently adjusted in all 6 degrees of freedom to some extent.

Main board: common questions

What microcontroller does the Main board use?

The Main board is built around the C2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Main board?

The Main board measures 42 × 67 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Main board?

56 components, from 24 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Main board design files?

From the JesusFreke/lalboard repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Main board design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its Apache-2.0 license, which JesusFreke chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Main board without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
