About the Kinetoscope Microcontroller & Register Board

Kinetoscope Microcontroller & Register Board is an open source Raspberry Pi PCB design by joeyparrish, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 50.8 × 78.7 mm, with 43 components from 14 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the 61302011821, from the Raspberry Pi family. Other key parts include the SN74AHC04PWR, SN74LV161APWR, SN74LV164APWR, SN74AHC373PWR and SN74AHC74PWR. By type, the board carries 15 capacitors, 14 ICs, 7 connectors and 7 resistors.

It belongs with the retro computing designs in this gallery.

The hardware is composed of several stacking boards, each of which hosts a set of subcomponents. The subcomponents are each in a subsheet, exposing hierarchical pins and buses to the parent sheet.

One of these boards includes a microcontroller with WiFi, and runs its own firmware to take commands from the Sega ROM. See firmware in the ../firmware/ folder.

Kinetoscope Microcontroller & Register Board: common questions

What microcontroller does the Kinetoscope Microcontroller & Register Board use?

The Kinetoscope Microcontroller & Register Board is built around the 61302011821, from the Raspberry Pi family.

How big is the Kinetoscope Microcontroller & Register Board?

The Kinetoscope Microcontroller & Register Board measures 50.8 × 78.7 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Kinetoscope Microcontroller & Register Board?

43 components, from 14 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Kinetoscope Microcontroller & Register Board design files?

From the joeyparrish/kinetoscope repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Kinetoscope Microcontroller & Register Board design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which joeyparrish chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Kinetoscope Microcontroller & Register Board without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Raspberry Pi firmware against it before you order a PCB.
