About the RMK-right PCB

RMK-right is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by KarlPeter5039, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 182.9 × 127 mm, with 76 components from 15 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ProMicro, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the TRRS. By type, the board carries 34 switches, 34 diodes, 2 ICs, 2 resistors and 1 connector.

It belongs with the keyboards and displays & leds designs in this gallery.

Final iteration of the Reconfigurable Mechanical Keyboard including firmware and PCB files

Developed at Lehigh University for ECE 258 by Sumin Lim '23 and Karl Peter '23

While there have been many designs for modular keyboards, nothing out there really comes close to the practicality of our design. It will be different from generic commercial designs by adding additional peripherals including rotary encoders for analog input, a fully modular set up, and dedicated keyboard portions that can be connected and disconnected at any time.

RMK-right: common questions

What microcontroller does the RMK-right use?

The RMK-right is built around the ProMicro, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the RMK-right PCB?

The RMK-right measures 182.9 × 127 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the RMK-right?

76 components, from 15 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the RMK-right design files?

From the KarlPeter5039/RMK-final repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the RMK-right design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with KarlPeter5039. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the RMK-right without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
