About the Peripheral unit PCB

Peripheral unit is an open source Nordic nRF PCB design by kzoropoulos, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 77 × 37 mm, with 13 components from 12 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the MDBT50Q-P1M, from the Nordic nRF family. Other key parts include the TPS22860DBVR, TPS7A0233PDBVR and TPS7A0218PDBVR. By type, the board carries 4 ICs, 4 connectors, 2 resistors, 1 battery holder, 1 switch and 1 capacitor.

It belongs with the iot & wireless, sensors and power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

A low-power, privacy-friendly elderly fall detection system using 60GHz mmWave radar, PIR sensors, and Zigbee. It features independent room sensors and a resilient central hub for real-time emergency alerts.

Sensor Nodes: Autonomous ceiling-mounted units. They integrate a mmWave radar for point cloud processing, a PIR sensor for hardware wake-up, and a low-power microcontroller. Powered by Lithium Thionyl Chloride (Li-SOCl2) batteries. Central Hub: Data collection and processing unit. It operates as a Zigbee Coordinator, verifies fall events, and routes emergency notifications via Wi-Fi. Supported by an uninterruptible power supply system (Backup battery).

Peripheral unit: common questions

What microcontroller does the Peripheral unit use?

The Peripheral unit is built around the MDBT50Q-P1M, from the Nordic nRF family.

How big is the Peripheral unit PCB?

The Peripheral unit measures 77 × 37 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Peripheral unit?

13 components, from 12 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Peripheral unit design files?

From the kzoropoulos/Fall_Detection_System repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Peripheral unit design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with kzoropoulos. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Peripheral unit without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Nordic nRF firmware against it before you order a PCB.
