About the Af PCB

Af is an open source RISC-V PCB design by machdyne, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-P-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 50 × 14 mm, with 34 components from 20 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the CH32V003F4P6, from the RISC-V family. Other key parts include the DRV8220 and AP62300TWU-7. By type, the board carries 11 resistors, 8 capacitors, 6 transistors, 3 ICs, 2 connectors and 1 fuse.

It belongs with the robotics & motion designs in this gallery.

Open-Source Pick and Place Autofeeder

Machdyne AF is an open-source project for a PNP autofeeder system[^1].

The autofeeder design is a closed-loop system that uses an infrared LED and phototransistor array[^2] to precisely detect the tape position. The tape is moved forward using a geared DC motor and a sprocket. The cover tape is partially separated and advanced with the tape.

The autofeeders can be chained together with 4 wires and communicate with the system controller using the I2C protocol.

Af: common questions

What microcontroller does the Af use?

The Af is built around the CH32V003F4P6, from the RISC-V family.

How big is the Af PCB?

The Af measures 50 × 14 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Af?

34 components, from 20 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Af design files?

From the machdyne/af repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Af design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-P-2.0 license, which machdyne chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Af without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RISC-V firmware against it before you order a PCB.
