About the ATAPIMega PCB
ATAPIMega is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by Manawyrm, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 100 × 100 mm, with 59 components from 35 distinct parts.
Its main chip is the ATMEGA2560-16AU, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the HD44780 and SY8113B. By type, the board carries 18 resistors, 15 capacitors, 9 connectors, 7 switches, 3 ICs and 1 crystal.
It belongs with the audio and retro computing designs in this gallery.
From the project
Standalone (P)ATA/ATAPI CD Player
ATAPIMega is a hardware project which allows regular (P)ATA CD/DVD drives to be used as a standalone Audio-CD player. This repository contains KiCAD PCB design and schematic for the CD player.
The PCB accepts (regulated!) 12V DC power via a 5.5mm/2.1mm barrel jack and outputs 12V/5V for the CD drive. The microcontroller is an ATmega2560 (Arduino Mega-compatible), chosen for 5V-I/O voltage and high pin-count (and bad availability of STM32's in the component shortage of 2021).

ATAPIMega: common questions
What microcontroller does the ATAPIMega use?
The ATAPIMega is built around the ATMEGA2560-16AU, from the AVR/Arduino family.
How big is the ATAPIMega PCB?
The ATAPIMega measures 100 × 100 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.
How many components are on the ATAPIMega?
59 components, from 35 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.
Where can I download the ATAPIMega design files?
From the Manawyrm/ATAPIMega repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.
Can I use the ATAPIMega design in my own project?
Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which Manawyrm chose for the repository.
Can I test firmware for the ATAPIMega without the hardware?
Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
