About the Pico portfolio PCB

Pico portfolio is an open source Raspberry Pi PCB design by markmcgookin, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 205.1 × 68.4 mm, with 130 components from 4 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RaspberryPi_Pico_W, from the Raspberry Pi family. By type, the board carries 64 switches, 64 diodes, 1 module and 1 connector.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

From the project

This project is an attempt to create a maker-friendly keyboard using the same form factor as the original Atari Portfolio keyboard.

This project is an attempt to create a maker-friendly keyboard using the same form factor as the original Atari Portfolio keyboard.

What started out as an attempt to re-use broken atari portfolio keyboards in new/modern projects hit a wall when tryign to remove the keyboard from its original housing. The housing on the actual Atari Portfolio is very custom for the device and case, and doesn't lend itself well to re-modeling, due to the makeup of the matrix, individual keys and rubber membrane.

Pico portfolio: common questions

What microcontroller does the Pico portfolio use?

The Pico portfolio is built around the RaspberryPi_Pico_W, from the Raspberry Pi family.

How big is the Pico portfolio PCB?

The Pico portfolio measures 205.1 × 68.4 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Pico portfolio?

130 components, from 4 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Pico portfolio design files?

From the markmcgookin/pico-portfolio repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Pico portfolio design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with markmcgookin. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Pico portfolio without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Raspberry Pi firmware against it before you order a PCB.
