About the Butterfly hw PCB

Butterfly hw is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by mignon-p, published on GitHub under the CC-BY-SA-4.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 93.1 × 65.5 mm, with 26 components from 9 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATTINY85-20PU, from the AVR/Arduino family. By type, the board carries 18 diodes, 2 connectors, 2 capacitors, 1 IC, 1 switch and 1 resistor.

It belongs with the displays & leds designs in this gallery.

From the project

KiCad and Gerber files for a nightlight shaped like a butterfly.

This repository contains the [KiCad][5] and [Gerber][6] files for a PCB nightlight shaped like a butterfly.

The nightlight contains 18 "NeoPixel" (WS-2812) LEDs, controlled by an ATtiny85 microcontroller. (The firmware for the microcontroller is in [a separate repository][7].)

There is a tiny potentiometer on the back, which can be used to control the brightness. (This functionality is handled in software, so it could potentially be repurposed, such as to control speed or color instead.)

Butterfly hw: common questions

What microcontroller does the Butterfly hw use?

The Butterfly hw is built around the ATTINY85-20PU, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Butterfly hw PCB?

The Butterfly hw measures 93.1 × 65.5 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Butterfly hw?

26 components, from 9 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Butterfly hw design files?

From the mignon-p/butterfly-hw repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Butterfly hw design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CC-BY-SA-4.0 license, which mignon-p chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Butterfly hw without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
