About the Phase PCB

Phase is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by mjpauly, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 128 × 92.6 mm, with 66 components from 17 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATmega32U4-AU, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the PCA9555PW. By type, the board carries 21 relays, 21 diodes, 9 capacitors, 8 resistors, 2 ICs and 2 connectors.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

From the project

42-key split keyboard inspired by Corne, Kyria, and Ferris

- Kyria stagger, Corne thumb cluster, Ferris-inspired electronics. - USB-C - Reversible PCB for use with both hands. - MX-style key switch support with optional Kailh hot swap sockets. - 42 keys.

A one-off moon-themed sand-cast aluminum case was also designed in Spring 2022. See here for photos of the manufacturing process!

- Assembled and tested - Fixes SDA/SCL swap - Removes silkscreen art (just too cluttered) - Gerbers are at phase/JLCPCB2022-01-29v101.zip.

Phase: common questions

What microcontroller does the Phase use?

The Phase is built around the ATmega32U4-AU, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Phase PCB?

The Phase measures 128 × 92.6 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Phase?

66 components, from 17 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Phase design files?

From the mjpauly/phase repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Phase design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with mjpauly. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Phase without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
