About the Taxelscan PCB

Taxelscan is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by MLeggiero, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 52 × 46 mm, with 24 components from 10 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the XIAO RP2350, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the SN74LVC595APWR, CD74HC4067SM96 and TLV9062IDGKR. By type, the board carries 9 capacitors, 7 ICs, 5 resistors, 2 connectors and 1 module.

TaxelScan reads a 16 × 32 pressure surface (512 taxels) at 80 frames per second by default and has been measured at 200 fps. A XIAO RP2350 turns the raw matrix into a cleaned pressure map and contact records—area, force proxy, peak, centroid, and bounds—before the data reaches the host.

Taxelscan: common questions

What microcontroller does the Taxelscan use?

The Taxelscan is built around the XIAO RP2350, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Taxelscan PCB?

The Taxelscan measures 52 × 46 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Taxelscan?

24 components, from 10 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Taxelscan design files?

From the MLeggiero/taxelscan repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Taxelscan design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which MLeggiero chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Taxelscan without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
