About the CS240LX-spr22 PCB

CS240LX-spr22 is an open source Raspberry Pi PCB design by NerdySouth, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 67.3 × 45.7 mm, with 6 components from 4 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Raspberry_Pi_2_3, from the Raspberry Pi family. Other key parts include the NRF24L01_Breakout. By type, the board carries 2 ICs, 2 connectors and 2 capacitors.

This lab is focused on designing printed circuit boards (PCBs), which you may find useful in your final project. This is moreso a quick lesson on how to replace your bundles of wires with a more reliable board, rather than how to actually design electrical circuits on a board which is a much more involved discussion.

Our goal is to create a board that can plug into the Raspberry Pi GPIO header and connect to the USB/UART converter and 2 NRFs. You can also optionally add other devices to the board of your choosing. My board looks something like this:

CS240LX-spr22: common questions

What microcontroller does the CS240LX-spr22 use?

The CS240LX-spr22 is built around the Raspberry_Pi_2_3, from the Raspberry Pi family.

How big is the CS240LX-spr22 PCB?

The CS240LX-spr22 measures 67.3 × 45.7 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the CS240LX-spr22?

6 components, from 4 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the CS240LX-spr22 design files?

From the NerdySouth/CS240LX-spr22 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the CS240LX-spr22 design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which NerdySouth chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the CS240LX-spr22 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Raspberry Pi firmware against it before you order a PCB.
